The One Quart Magazine Playlist is a weekly selection of music picked by various One Quart contributors. It’s our take on what’s spinning on the office stereo. The playlist will be published every Monday.

One Quart Magazine Weekly Playlist #16
This weeks Playlist displays the usual eclectic nature but does have a penchant for grungy sounds and alt-country. With the newest tracks at the top end of the Playlist, we start with a Ville Kilpeläinen selection taken from French duo AIR: “AIR celebrates their 20th anniversary this year and put out a compilation in the summer. This is a previously unreleased track from that comp. (from the soundtrack of Quartier Lointain). AIR didn’t really make an impression after their first great 3 albums (4 if you count the Virgin Suicides soundtrack) – but there are real gems within their latter-day output as well…” Ville also contributes a new cut from Thundercat and an oldie from Terry Reid which he informs us is “Wild and probably the best cover of the oft-covered Cher classic Bang Bang” .
Nick Triani painfully submits Metallica‘s new single ‘Moth Into Flame’ which brings him to question weather Metallica are “possibly the worst band ever”. Aki Lehti retorts that although the band have been comedy gold for twenty years, their new cut “is their best song since 1991”. Phew, glad we got that straight. Another record celebrating 20 years of age is Weezer‘s Pinkerton. Nick adds ‘El Scorcho’ from the album to the mix, commenting “…it really felt like Weezer would take over the world at the time of El Scorcho”. What followed from the band was a disappointment to him, but cuts from A Certain Ratio (“ahead of it’s time”) and New Radicals (“like the best pop music”) sure have cheered him up.

As well as offering new tracks from Weekend (Feat. Daft Punk) and The Dillinger Escape Plan, Fiacha Harrington hits a purple patch with songs from Prince, Animal Collective and A$AP Rocky. Karstein Volle brings Pixies to the table along with some domestic Deep Turtle, whilst Pinja Niemi offers us a theme song for a new swedish tv-series Springfloden – Nousuvesi, performed by Jonathan Johansson. Mark B Odom proffers Bill Callahan‘s ‘Drover’, whilst Jaakko Mattila includes Screamin’ Jay Hawkins ‘Hong Kong’ for the lyrics and country supergroup The Highwaymen “as a result of tidying up my records”. The extra crunch on the playlist can be found from his selection of Smashing Pumpkins ‘Cherub Rock’. Aki Lehti brings Alt-Country goodness in the form of two new picks from Mandolin Orange and Tom Brosseau. Astrid Swan listened a lot to the Jimi Tenor/Toni Allen cut ‘Selfish Gene’ – as she was performing the song with Jimi last week. She also includes an extended version of Kate Bush’s ‘Cloudbusting’: “Just because a Kate Bush live collection is coming soon and I heard one song from it and it sounded way too good”
But we’ll leave you with a couple of thoughts from Joel Kupiainen on his two selections for the playlist. First up his pick from Finnish band Kirlian Crossing: “A band with ties to Echo is your Love, KC were very underrated back when they were putting out records. They had a very idiosyncratic take on the whole ambient noise-pop thing, but because of scarce gigs and general strangeness, they never really got much attention – despite some positive reviews. I recently played through their albums, all of which were released by Helsinki-based indie Verdura Records, and are worth seeking out.” On his Dead C selection Joel notes: “The mighty Dead C recently put out a new album and are currently on tour. A good reason as any to revisit them. Although affiliated with Flying Nun early on, the Dead C are far better known as New Zealand’s most disliked band. Not even an opening slot for Sonic Youth in the 90’s made the locals warm up to them. Ironically, they enjoy a strong cult-status among aficionados of both noise-rock and free improv in Europe and the U.S. Even in Finland you can find a couple of diehards, yours truly being one of the converted.”
Enjoy.
