Hello One Quart Magazine
An oft repeated quote I’ve seen spread across various social media this year is #2016 #fuckoffthen. The reason for such a dismissive expletive can be easily attributed to the veritable catalog of bad news that appears on a daily basis, shaking our very foundations. Make no mistake, these are some of the worst times I can remember.
The idea of launching a culture magazine is something Astrid Swan and I have been considering for awhile. One Quart has been in gestation for many months. Let me explain without making it too obvious: we are a group of people coming together to have some fun, express opinions that are hopefully valid and exciting and that might also intensify debate. We need mystery to fire our imaginations and if I spell everything out for you so clearly that you don’t have to think, then what’s the point? At this moment I want to leave One Quart open for discovery. That should keep things exciting.
This much I know: One Quart is a magazine based in Helsinki focusing on culture, art and politics, written in English and Finnish. We’ll feature new content everyday. I can confirm that we are committed. We are a collective of many individual artists, creatives, thinkers and doers together on one page. While we do not share the same views, experiences, bodies, politics or backgrounds, we cherish our differences. One Quart wants to be a part of the change. Be it whatever it will be and needs to be. One Quart could be critical, but always loving.

Many people have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make One Quart a reality.
Our editorial team: Astrid Swan, Fiacha Harrington, Henna Hietamäki and Mark B Odom. Our AD’s Timo Bontenbal, Eetu Maaranen and Kaarlo Stauffer. Jenny Väre and Timo have worked creatively to build our page. Pinja Niemi has been a reasoned head. We have an impressive list of contributors. I’m excited to be heading a team bringing their work to you every day. This is happening.
2016 has thus far been granted extra bummer status as so many cherished people leave this way station called Planet Earth. The stench of death hangs heavy in the air. Who’s next and why should we really care? People die everyday. Apparently 18 million a year. Not just rock stars – shocker. Crucially, whilst I mourn heroes I never even knew, I’ve decided to not give up on 2016 just yet. This can wait awhile.
Forever an optimist – things are starting to get interesting.
