People say politicians are all the same and politics doesn’t matter

POST SCRIPT

It´s two years since I wrote this strip and the bread queues have just gotten longer. Every major political party but one campaigned on an austerity platform in the last election. The EU has pursued austerity since the 2008 crash and we see the results every day now. The US opted for stimulus and got out relatively quickly.

Immigration and social welfare got scapegoated as the source of the bank crisis. The remedy was to dismantle or privatize welfare and stop immigration, for the sake of a sound economy. At the same time the perpetrators of this crisis are still living in luxury. Now squeezing out money meant for everyone’s well being goes under the guise of privatisation. Everything works better with useless profiteers and market gamblers added on top.

The remedy was to dismantle or privatize welfare and stop immigration, for the sake of a sound economy.

Pointing out that bread queues is an abomination in the face of government complacency will brand you either the “bleeding heart liberal” or the “social justice warrior” strawman. Most progressives dread the inevitable hate mail too much to pipe up.

The discussion went meta ten years ago and we spend more time discussing how we discuss, rather than fixing the issues at hand. The lack of common decency is astounding, we demonize the weak and adore the 1%. The myopic focus on immigration makes life easy for the profiteers. People are squabbling over refugees while their social rights are quietly removed. I used to be worried. Now I’m scared.
