Levi’s Vintage Clothing (LVC) launched back in 1999. The purpose of the sub-brand was to bring its iconic silhouettes back in all their former glory. What originally was a small capsule collection has now expanded to a full range consisting of all the variations of Levi’s classic 501s from their introduction in 1890 all the way through to 1983 (when they initially stopped producing selvedge denim). None of these models is more iconic than the 1947 501XX, this jean is often considered the most influential model and template for just about all jeans that came after. In denim aficionado circles everyone knows what 1947 Levi’s is and all of the minute details a pair of these trousers entails. But why should that matter to me? It should matter to you because every man (and woman) should own a proper pair of jeans, forget those semi-spandex things that the high street is trying to pass off as denim.

The most important thing is the silhouette, this jean sits well on your body, the waist is, well where your real waist is, not half way down your rear end. This 501 has a classic straight fit in the leg, so that it appears to be slim without being tight. The LVC reproduction is faithful in all respects to its original counterpart, which was originally made for the boom in middle class and youth culture after World War II. It uses 12 oz red selvedge Cone Mills denim and is made in USA.

So how much is this all going to cost me? Well a pair of these will set you back about 250€. You might baulk at the price, but stop a moment and think, these are not made from substandard material sewn together in some sweatshop in the far east. Instead they are ethically manufactured and are built for durability. Wear them and love them.

So where can I get a pair? In Helsinki visit Pinkomo or buy online at Levi’s
